‘Child-Friendly JT’
The EU project ‘Child-Friendly JT - The right of minors to information, translation and interpretation in criminal proceedings: Development of child-friendly justice tools’, is entering its final stage of development. The project is coordinated by Fundación Diagrama and organisations from different Member States have participated in its development: SAPI (Bulgaria), Istituto Don Calabria (Italy), Hope for Children (Cyprus) and Udruga Most (Croatia).
The main objective of the project, co-funded by the Justice Programme of the European Union, is to contribute to the effective application of European Union criminal law, specifically to the promotion of the right of children and young people to information, translation and interpretation in criminal proceedings.
Leaflets about the rights of children in conflict with the law
One of the project’s principal outputs has been the creation of three information leaflets aimed at children in conflict with the law, as well as corresponding versions for their parents, carers or legal guardians.
These leaflets, soon to be published, contain information about the rights of children at different stages of criminal proceedings: police arrest, trial and pre-trial detention. In order to ensure the right of children to translation and interpretarion in criminal proceedings, they have been translated into all of the official languages of the European Union Member States, in addition to Arabic, Chinese and Russian.
As a result, children who become involved with the justice system will be able to receive information about their rights through these leaflets even in cases where they do not speak the language of the country they are in. Furthermore, the language of the leaflets, tailored specifically to children, will facilitate their active participation in criminal proceedings.
Final Conference
The Final Conference, entitled ‘Rethinking Juvenile Justice Systems: Challenges to achieving a more child-friendly justice system’, will take place on 12th December in Valencia (Spain).
In addition to presenting the main conclusions drawn from the work of the partners involved, the conference will be a space for experts and professionals in the field of juvenile justice to meet and exchange their views.
